Due to economical value, cultivated bananas have received a lot of research attention. Despite this, little attention has been given to their taxonomy, the fleshy nature of the plant, their similar morphology, and poor representation in herbaria being reasons. This book reports on taxonomical research done by the authors of the last five years. Fresh live collections were made throughout South India and herbarium specimens were deposited. Twenty-four distinct edible cultivated banana varieties were described under five genomic groups. The fruit pulp of thirteen cultivars was analysed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The results are described in a morpho-taxonomical an chemo-taxonomical section.
